A sequence is a cascade of events initiated by a single malformation. A deformation is an alteration of morphogenesis caused by unusual forces on previously normal tissue (e.g. clubfoot and plagiocephaly). A malformation is an abnormality of morphogenesis caused by an intrinsic abnormal developmental process (e.g. neural tube defects, cleft lip, cleft palate).
